How to show funds for your french student visa application and renewal?.

This article covers the various ways in which a student can show some proof of resources, towards a student visa application in their home country and its renewal in France.

The primary requirement is to provide sufficient final resources for the duration of the course in France. This includes the tuition fees and living expenses. As French student visas are issued for one year, a student must prove living expenses of a minimum of 7400€. This is broken down into 615€ x 12 months. It can be proved via one or more of the following sources.

1. Education Loan:

  • Submit the loan sanction letter from your bank. Preferably a nationalised bank.
  • Along with the last 3-6 months of your bank statements.
  • It is not required to show the entire funds in the bank account.

Visa renewal in France:

  • Same as above. It’s highly recommended to submit a french translation of the loan sanction letter.
  • Last 3 months loan account bank statement, with funds transfer history to France.
  • Last 3 months French bank account statements. Same account which receives the funds in France.

2. Self-sponsorship:

  • You should attach your last 3 months pay slip, if you were working.
  • Your Income Tax returns of last 2 years. This is very important for non-salaried business people.
  • Your last 3 months bank statements, with sufficient proof of funds.
  • It is mandatory to show the entire funds (1 year) in the bank account, especially when you will be resigning from your job or already resigned.

Visa renewal in France:

  • Same as above (Ofcourse not payslips unless you are doing a part-time job in France).
  • Last 3 months French bank account statements. Same account which receives the funds in France.

3. Parent(s) sponsorship:

You should attach documents to prove that your sponsor is currently working with a good salary or doing business.

  • A detailed sponsorship affidavit letter from the sponsor and an attestation from a bank manager. The templates are given below.
  • ID proof of the sponsoring parent (copy of passport).
  • The last 3 salary slips of the parent sponsoring your education in France.
  • Income Tax returns of the parent, for the last 2 years. This is very important for non-salaried business people.
  • Last 3 bank statements of the salary bank account, from the sponsoring parent.
  • If the parent is a business person, attach similar proofs.
  • It’s not mandatory to show the entire funds, as the parent(s) will be sponsoring you from their monthly salary. The idea is to show regular transactions in the account.
  • It’s good to have a couple of lakhs in their account. If they are not earning currently, you must show the entire fund in the bank account.

Affidavit of support on a stamp paper attested by a Notary. This sponsorship may be from the father/ mother/ both / relatives. This statement may be worded as follows:

Visa renewal in France:

  • Same as above.
  • Additionally, your last 3 months French bank account statements. Same account which receives the funds in France.

4. Scholarship:

  • Scholarship letter explaining the detailed distribution of funds.
  • If the total scholarship value is less than 7400€, you need to provide additional source of funds.

Visa renewal in France:

  • Same as above.
  • Additionally, your last 3 months’ French bank account statements. Same account which receives the funds in France.

Do’s and Dont’s:

  • If there is a Fixed deposit, you need to provide a bank letter that explains that this FD is meant only for education.
  • EPF, PPF, NPS, Mutual Funds, etc are not accepted.
  • It is recommended to show the funds directly in your bank account, instead of a fixed deposit.
  • Only french bank statements will be accepted for the visa renewal in France. If you submit your forex travel card statements, your application will be closed due to insufficient documentation.

Hi. Thanks form your Helpful information.

I have one doubt regarding proof of funds.

My father going to sponsor for my studies but through a gold loan so I’m confused whether the consulate will accept the gold loan as proof of funds?

Can you please help me out in this subject.

    1. Hello,
A gold loan is nit an education loan and so will nit be treated in the same way. If i was in your situation, i would show the funds in my bank account. The funds can be from the gold loan.

  2. Hi, I have one doubt. I will be going to spend an exchange term in France and the Bank(which sanctioned my Education loan for MBA) will be financing my stay there. The amount as per calculation will be around 2.2lac. Can I just show the proof of my loan or do I need to show some amount in my personal account?

  3. Hi,

Is it okay if the proof of funds letter issued by the bank is over a week old on the day of Visa appointment? If yes, do I carry the Bank statement only until the day the when the proof of funds letter was issued or show the latest transactions? For example the POF letter states that there is X amount of Balance of 1st June, but my visa appointment is on 9th June, do I carry a bank statement that shows transactions until 1st June or 8th June?

    1. Hello,
A recent dated letter will work. 1 or 2 weeks old is not an issue. But, the bank statements can be downloaded and printed out even on the day (or previous day) of the visa appointment.
