How to show funds for your french student visa application and renewal?.

This article covers the various ways in which a student can show some proof of resources, towards a student visa application in their home country and its renewal in France.

The primary requirement is to provide sufficient final resources for the duration of the course in France. This includes the tuition fees and living expenses. As French student visas are issued for one year, a student must prove living expenses of a minimum of 7400€ and the tuition fees for the 1st year. This is broken down into 615€ x 12 months. It can be proved via one or more of the financial sources explained in this article.

For renewing the student resident permit in France, funds should be proved for the entire academic year. In my case, I had submitted my initial loan sanction letter, part-time job pay slips, Indian & French bank account statements. As I had at least 650€ coming into French bank account every month due to my part-time job, I didn’t show any additional funds in my bank account for the renewal. If this is not applicable in your case, then it’s highly recommended to show funds via one or more of the financial resources explained in the article.

Note: I did not use my education loan for any personal expenses in the 2nd year because my part-time job took care of it. Also, paid a part of the remaining tuition fee using the salary from the same job and then internship salary during the 4th semester.

All the documents submitted must be dated less than 3-6 months old. Ideally, the last available  version of the document.

Education Loan

  • Submit the loan sanction letter from your bank. Preferably a nationalised bank due to lower interest rates. Private lenders like HDFC Credila, etc are accepted too.
  • Don’t have to wait until the disbursement of the loan amount to the bank account.
  • Along with the last 3-6 months of your bank statements.
  • It is not required to show the entire funds in the bank account.

Visa renewal in France

  • Same as above. It’s highly recommended to submit a french translation of the loan sanction letter.
  • It’s highly recommended to get a new attestation from the bank guaranteeing the remaining funds in the loan. The second year too requires a guarantee of atleast 6000€.
  • Last 3 months loan account bank statement, with funds transfer history to France.
  • Last 3 months French bank account statements. Same account which receives the funds in France. Prefectures prefer to see an average incoming transfer of at least 650€ per month in these statements.

Self-sponsorship

  • You should attach your last 3 months pay slip, if you were working.
  • Your Income Tax returns of last 2 years. This is very important for non-salaried business people.
  • Your last 3 months bank statements, with sufficient proof of funds.
  • It is mandatory to show the entire funds (1 year) in the bank account, especially when you will be resigning from your job or already resigned.

Visa renewal in France

  • Same as above.
  • Last 2 months’ payslips, if you are doing a part-time job in France.
  • Last 3 months’ French bank account statements. The same account that receives the funds in France.
  • You can also add proof of income from internships, part-time jobs, etc.

Family Sponsorship

You should attach documents to prove that your sponsor is currently working with a good salary or doing business. The sponsor can be one or both the parents, spouse, sibling(s) or a family relative.

  • A detailed sponsorship affidavit letter from the sponsor and an attestation from a bank manager. The templates are given below.
  • ID proof of the sponsoring parent (copy of passport).
  • The last 3 salary slips of the person sponsoring your education in France.
  • Income Tax returns of the sponsor, for the last 2 years. This is very important for non-salaried business people.
  • Last 3 bank statements of the salary bank account, from the sponsoring parent.
  • If the sponsor is a business person, attach similar proofs.
  • It’s not mandatory to show the entire funds, as the parent(s) will be sponsoring you from their monthly salary. The idea is to show regular transactions in the account.
  • It’s good to have a couple of lakhs in their account. If they are not earning currently, you must show the entire fund in the bank account.
  • Sponsorship by a friend is not a good idea.

Note: If the sponsor is from an unorganized sector including farming, then it’s better to show the total funds in the Bank account or get an education loan. This is suggested because these people may not have proofs such as ITR, salary slips, business registration, etc.

Affidavit of support on a stamp paper attested by a Notary. This sponsorship may be from the father/ mother/ both / relatives. This statement may be worded as follows:

To whomsoever it may concern
I Mr.—–(Name of sponsor) pledge to bear the financial responsibility to the tune of Rs——— equivalent to Euros————-(write in numerals and do not use the word “lacs”) towards Mr/Miss—–(your name) higher education in France.
Signature of sponsor:
Date:

A statement on the bank’s letterhead, attested by the bank manager and stamped by the bank. The statement may be worded as follows:

To whomsoever it may concern
Mr.—(sponsor’s name) has assets worth Rs——– equivalent to Euros————- as deposits and investments in this bank. He has been a client with us since——date—.
Proof of these assets is enclosed as attested photocopies.
Signature of the Bank Manager:
Stamp of the bank:

Bank certificate: If  there funds as fixed deposits, a bank certificate is mandatory and it should explicitly state that the funds are for higher education in France. An example certificate is available at the end of this article.

Visa renewal in France

  • Same as above.
  • Additionally, please provide your last 3 months’ French bank account statements. The same account that receives the funds in France.
Affidavit from Bank about funds

Scholarship

  • Scholarship letter explaining the detailed distribution of funds.
  • If the total scholarship value is less than 7400€ (living expenses) per year, you need to provide additional source of funds such as bank deposits, bank loans, sponsorship, etc.
  • Here is a List of French Scholarships for Indian Students.

Visa renewal in France

  • Same as above.
  • Additionally, please provide your last 3 months’ French bank account statements. The same account that receives the funds in France.

Alternance / Apprenticeship

  • If you are enrolled in an apprentice program and sponsored by an enterprise, you must submit the apprentice contract or offer letter from your employer.
  • If the total salary offered is less than 7400€ (living expenses), you must provide proof of other financial resources.

Visa renewal in France

  • Same as above.
  • Last 3 months’ French bank account statements. The same account that receives the salary. Prefectures prefer to see an average incoming transfer of at least 650€ per month in these statements.

Do’s and Dont’s:

  • In the case of multiple resources, you must attach proof of each financial resource.
  • It is recommended to show the funds directly in your bank account, instead of a fixed deposit.
  • If there is a fixed deposit (FD), you must provide a bank letter explaining that this FD is meant only for education.
  • EPF, PPF, NPS, Mutual Funds, etc are not accepted.
  • For student visa renewals in France, only French bank statements will be accepted. If you submit your forex travel card statements, your application will be closed due to insufficient documentation.

Hi. Thanks form your Helpful information.

I have one doubt regarding proof of funds.

My father going to sponsor for my studies but through a gold loan so I’m confused whether the consulate will accept the gold loan as proof of funds?

Can you please help me out in this subject.

    1. Hello,
A gold loan is nit an education loan and so will nit be treated in the same way. If i was in your situation, i would show the funds in my bank account. The funds can be from the gold loan.

  2. Hi, I have one doubt. I will be going to spend an exchange term in France and the Bank(which sanctioned my Education loan for MBA) will be financing my stay there. The amount as per calculation will be around 2.2lac. Can I just show the proof of my loan or do I need to show some amount in my personal account?

  3. Hi,

Is it okay if the proof of funds letter issued by the bank is over a week old on the day of Visa appointment? If yes, do I carry the Bank statement only until the day the when the proof of funds letter was issued or show the latest transactions? For example the POF letter states that there is X amount of Balance of 1st June, but my visa appointment is on 9th June, do I carry a bank statement that shows transactions until 1st June or 8th June?

    1. Hello,
A recent dated letter will work. 1 or 2 weeks old is not an issue. But, the bank statements can be downloaded and printed out even on the day (or previous day) of the visa appointment.

  4. May i ask regarding “parent sponsorship” ? Is this “parent” only refers to biological or adpted parents? Or could it be somebody related to me, like my aunt or grandmother or any relatives by blood? I am umcertain if I could have a relative who can sponsor my student stay in France.

Hello bro, Thank you for this valuable information, and I have one doubt regarding sponsorship.
My dad is my main sponsor, and My uncle (my mother’s brother) is my second sponsor.

I have every document of my father and my uncles such as
    1) Payslips
2)3 years ITR of my uncle & 2 years ITR of my dad
3)3 months’ Payslips of both uncle & dad.
4)6 months’ bank statements with the sign and stamp of bank managers of both Dad and uncle
    5) 12 lakhs savings amount Declaration form from the bank with sign and stamp of my father’s account.
    6) 5 lakhs savings amount Declaration form from the bank with sign and stamp of my uncle’s account.

now my question is should I write the combined affidavit of sponsorship of my dad and uncle stating that these two are my sponsors?? As the initials(Last name) would be different for my dad and uncle, should I need to mention the relationship status in the affidavit form like ” Father’s name father of my name” and “Uncle name uncle of My name”. or I need to write the separate separate affidavits???

      1. Hi bro, I have some serious issues here. As my sponsors are my dad and uncle I am providing every document of both of them. but, both of has carry different names on different documents.

my uncle’s name in a bank account and payslip is “Pallotu” instead of “Pallothu”(correct name). in ITR, and other govt documents carrying an original name.

Even I had the same issue with my dad’s name also, I already have an affidavit for the misspelling of the name for my dad.

should I do the same with my uncle, as he is my second sponsor?? or completely remove my uncle as my second sponsor because it looks clumsy with different names on different documents?

one more thing is for my education loan my co-applicants are my dad and uncle. along with this, I am showing 12 lakhs savings in my dad’s account. so, as they mention both names in the sanction letter as co-applicants, should I need to write an affidavit stating that both are sponsoring me

        1. Hello,
When you are funded by a Bank education loan, you don’t have to submit any documents from your parents.

Please check the detailed explanations on the article.

Education loan and parents’s sponsorship are 2 different topics. Don’t mix them unnecessarily.

  6. Hi brother, my father & my uncle (my mother’s brother) are Sponsoring my education in France. For that I made a joint Affidavit of sponsorship along with that I have attached my father, uncle govt documents for proof. Additional to that I have attached my uncle pancard & mother pancard cuz both pancards carries their father name. Does it enough to tell them relationship ship between my uncle & me???. Additional to that I have attached my family card also which contains all family members details, which defines my mother & father relationship.

As I saw your message in the group regarding sponsorship of relatives if the initial is mismatch.

Can you please let me know the above documents will be enough to tell them the relationship between me & my uncle

    1. Hello,
Yes, you can attach documents like passport copy, Aadhaar, PAN, etc to probe family relationship. Its the notarized affidavit which is very important.

  7. Hi, my cousins are sponsoring my education in France. I have already paid 6 lakhs of my fees partially. I’m using their salary slips and ITRs as proof of funds. Their salaries are 18 LPA and 10 LPA, but they currently have only 1.5 lakhs in each account. Is this acceptable? ? If not, could you please guide me on a better approach, excluding support from parents?

  8. Hello Brother! My name is Ankit and i am from Nepal and have been admited at junia graduate school of engineering for my 2 year masters.the fee is 9000 euro per year and i have got 2000 euro scholarship per year which will be paid as a part of tution fee by college itself .I have taken the education loan of 23845 euro from the bank with full disbrushment in my sponser bank accout that is my father and also have a holding balance of 8345 euros in his saving account….Now i want to know that:
    1) what i have to do should i have to show the holding money from saving account?or education loan will covers the entire thing?
    2) My father is a salaried person working at private school with annual salary of 5753 euros and also runs the bussiness with one of his partner and have shared profit of annualy 15000 euros for each share holder.I have the tax clearance report of this fiscal year .should i have to show the tax clerance report of last 3 years for nepalese student?

    1. Hello Ankit, Keep it simple and follow the instructions in the article. Please refer to the education loan part and submit the documents listed. Do not complicate it unnecessarily.

  9. Hi Prasanth. I really appreciate all your support and guidance in this forum.

    My Situation:
I have been admitted to a public university in Dijon for 2 year course. I have accomodation in crous for 267euro/month. I have my mother as my sponsor and she holds around 7 Lakhs INR(Living cost only) but this is maintained only a month in her bank account through gold loan. My Tuition fee is already paid by self for entire year M1 only through my own funds. I have my fiance who would support my education at times whenever needed. He doesn’t maintain any funds in his bank account at all but has ITR’s and earns upto 11LPA currently. But we are not officially married yet.

    My Questions:

    1. I have my Visa appointment this week, Is it fine to have only around 7500 euros alone? (some people suggested to keep more funds than 615 eur*12 but I couldnt do) that too maintained in the bank account for around a month only.

    2. Can I get an affidavit from my fiance stating he would support my education along with ITR and payslips though he doesnt have a bank balance?

    3. Do I need to submit the proof how we got 7lakhs in my mother’s account?

    4. Do I need to provide validation for not maintaining the entire funds for last 3 months?

    1. Hello,
      1. 7500 EUR is the bare minimum required. So, its always better to have a bit more.

2 & 3. Please try to keep it simple. Its better to have one person as sponsor wo can provide an affidavit with supporting documents and also has some decent bank balance.

      4. An affidavit and bank certificate explaining that the funds are meant for the higher education in France is good enough. You can can find the templates in the article.

  10. Hí. Hi, my sister’s passport (who would sponsor me) is expired. Would it have to be renewed or could the national identity card (Colombia) be used. Do you have any recommendation for me?

Also, a question. I will be doing an internship at a university in France, all this applies to me too, right?

Thank you, this post is excellent and very informative.

    1. Hello Andres,
If its very urgent, you can submit the national ID but for non-europeans, a valid passport is preferred.

This article is applicable for all types of student visas.

  11. Hi Prashanth, Thank you for the information.
I have a doubt regarding the salary slips of the sponsor. My father is my sponsor and he is self employed. So, I have his IT Return and Computation of income of the last 2 years but don’t have the salary slips. I am also showing enough funds in the savings bank account. Is the salary slip mandatory for the visa process or I can provide some other document instead?
    Thank you!

    1. Hello Durgesh,
Of course, salary slips will it be available for business people. So, I have explained the documents required for both salaried and business people.

  12. Bhaswitha Chaganti

    Hey,

I have few queries regarding france student visa.

    1. Do I need to show the bank balance in my savings account or else in the French bank account?

    2. I am maintaining the bank balance in my savings account, so apart from that can I do my day to day transactions?

  13. Hi ,

    I have few doubts
currently my account have around 1.5L
I am currently employed at a Indian company. I am working 100% remotely for past 3 years and i am planning to continue job even after i get into france
I have a steady income of more than 615euros per month

So is this enough to show as proof of fund ?
I have seen in the campus france website a steady income is enough but when I contacted VFS they told me I should show full amount in my bank account

      1. But mine is not a freelancing, i am a permanent employee working remotely and my salary bank account is in india .

        1. Moreover when I discussed about my remote job with campus france they didn’t say anything that i need to resign my job

          1. Pls refer to the detailed article shared in the previous comment. It has all the explanations including the official govt references.

The only professional activity that can do done, when you are a non-EU student is a part-time job in France. So, no remote working, freelancing, business, etc.

This is the official legal info as per French govt. So, I can’t comment about something shared by Campus France.

  14. Hi , I have some pre approved personal loan offer from HDFC , in that case which document is required ? is the pre approved loan letter is enough ?

  15. Hello Sir , my case is that I am not an EU neither member of the 72 countries or territories mentioned to apply through campus France.
My question is , I am a Liberian residing in Liberia and my Aunty in the USA wants to be my full sponsor, how can this play out?

The second part of the Visa renewals in France, how will that be done? I will like to know if that part can be done when I shall have arrived on France or all should be done before travelling?
I am kinda confused on this …. please help me to understand better. Thanks

  16. Hello Prashant garu,

    I’m yet to start my Visa process. I have loan sanction letter of 44 lakhs from Yes Bank and my father has around 15-20 lakhs in his bank savings account with regular flow of large transactions from before. I’m also planning to pay first year tuition fee to my university (only 2nd year tuition fee & livings expenses to be shown in the form of loan & father’s savings). The current year ITR of my father shows almost 20 lakhs, but previous year ITR shows only 2-3 lakhs (we deliberately made it low to get applicable for a government scheme at that time). As we can’t change the amount in the ITRs now;

Can you please inform, will this be an issue for visa? Does it lead to visa rejection by any chance??

    1. Hello Spandana,

Please try to keep it simple. For the visa, only the 1st year expenses are relevant. I have explained the same in the article too. So, check the student loan chapter.

  17. Hello Prasanth,

Thank you for your insightful blog.

I read the chapter on education loans, and I have a question regarding the bank statements required after obtaining a loan for both tuition fees and living expenses. Specifically, how much funding should I have available in the last 3-6 months of my bank statements, as you mentioned in the requirements?

Additionally, will this amount be sufficient proof of funds for my visa application?

    Thank you!

    1. Hello Gaurav,
If the education loan is going to fund all the expenses (tuition, living, etc), it’s not required to show additional funds in the bank account.

If not, I would have mentioned about it in the loan chapter.

  18. Very insightful article. I’m going to be sponsored by my cousin which has agreed to but doesn’t bear same name as me and that of my parents could that be a problem for visa acquisition

    1. Hello,
May or may not be a problem depending on the supporting documents that you submit along with the visa application. Please check the affidavits (sponsor & bank) mentioned in the article
