Natural Gas Price in France due to inflation

Significant Increase of Natural Gas Prices in France for July 2024

Since the end of regulated gas tariffs on 30th June 2023, the Energy Regulatory Commission (CRE) has been publishing a monthly benchmark price for residential natural gas sales. The benchmark price for July 2024 has increased significantly when compared to the previous month.

July 2024 Gas Price Hike

The benchmark price for natural gas sales increased by 11.7% in July 2024 compared to June.

  • The Commission de régulation de l’énergie (CRE) publishes a monthly benchmark price for the sale of natural gas to residential consumers in France.
  • The average benchmark price for natural gas sales will be €129.2/MWh including VAT, up 11.7% from June 2024.
  • The average benchmark price excluding tax increases from €77.32/MWh to €90.38/MWh.
  • The CRE calculates an annual average price per MWh consumed, based on data provided by GRDF.
  • This price includes the fixed and variable tariffs applied to cooking, hot water, and heating consumers.

How are our Gas bills calculated?

The bill is composed of a fixed part (subscription fee), and a variable part, proportional to the amount of energy consumed. The final bill amount is the sum of 3 parts,

  • First, the price of the natural gas supplied.
  • Second, the cost of routing through the gas pipeline network.
  • Third, the taxes and contributions, constitute around 27% of the final bill.

The price of gas is also taken into account to calculate the price of electricity.

July 2024 Gas Prices per kWh

The Commission de Régulation de l’Énergie (CRE) publishes a benchmark price every month to help consumers compare the various gas suppliers’ offers.

  • This benchmark price consists of a subscription cost and a price per kWh.
  • This benchmark price (which is only indicative) also includes the costs of transporting and storing gas and the costs of managing your contract.
  • The price per kWh is based on a formula that determines the monthly cost of natural gas on the wholesale market based on supply and demand. It’s an indexed price.
  • Here are the various benchmark prices applicable for July 2024.

Some Tips to reduce energy bills

  • Reducing the heating by 1°C contributes to a 7% reduction in energy consumption.
  • A poorly maintained boiler can cause an overconsumption of 10 to 12%.
  • Using a washing machine at 30°C consumes 3 times less energy than washing at 90°C.
