1. What is a récépissé for a titre de séjour application?
When you submit your application for a carte de séjour at the préfecture or sous-préfecture in France and your file is complete, you will receive a temporary document called a récépissé.
- This document confirms that your application has been registered and authorizes you to legally reside in France while your file is under review.
- In some cases, it may also permit you to work and travel.
Note: If you apply via the ANEF online service, you will receive an attestation instead of a récépissé. More details in What are the online attestations of French Resident Permits?: Confirmation, Prolongation & Favorable Decision.
2. Who is eligible to receive a récépissé?
- Any foreign national applying for a titre de séjour in France—whether it is a première demande (1st application), renouvellement (renewal), or duplicata (duplicate)—is eligible to receive a récépissé.
- In other words, if you are not a French citizen and have submitted an application for a titre de séjour, this document applies to you.
3. What are the conditions for obtaining a récépissé?
A récépissé is issued only if your French residence permit application file is complete. It serves as temporary permission to reside in France while your titre de séjour application is being processed.
4. How long is a récépissé valid?
The validity period depends on the type of French residence permit application:
- 1st application (première demande): You will receive a récépissé valid for 4 or 6 months. This period covers the processing of your file and the issuance of your titre de séjour. In exceptional cases, it can be renewed for up to 3 additional months.
- Renewal or Duplicate (renouvellement or duplicata): You will receive a récépissé valid for 3 months, beginning the day after the expiration of your current carte de séjour. This document may also be subject to renewal.
5. Can I travel with a récépissé?
The travel authorization depends on the type of récépissé:
- A récépissé de première demande de titre de séjour issued during a 1st application or as a duplicata does not allow you to travel.
- A récépissé de renouvellement de titre de séjour issued during a renewal does allow travel, provided you carry both the récépissé and your previous titre de séjour along with your passport.
Important: If your récépissé has expired, it will not allow you to re-enter France, and you will need to apply for a visa de retour.
6. Can I work with a récépissé?
Yes, depending on your situation, the récépissé can authorize you to work.
- Allowed to work if the récépissé mentions autorise à travailler.
- Work is not allowed, when it says n’autorise pas à travailler.
7. When and how can you renew your récépissé?
- You can request the renewal of your récépissé once it nears the end of its validity.
- For more details on the process, you should contact your local préfecture or sous-préfecture in France. The details are usually available on the prefecture’s website.

8. Real examples of récépissés
There are so many types of récépissés issued by Prefectures in France.
Example 1: Un récépissé de première demande de titre de séjour
This récépissé is issued while applying for a residence permit.
- Allows you to legally stay in France.
- Allows you to work in France, if the récépissé mentions autorise à travailler.
- Does not allow you to travel outside France.
Example 2: Un récépissé de renouvellement de titre de séjour
This récépissé is issued while renewing an existing residence permit. It extends all rights of the expired residence permit.
- Allows you to legal stay in France.
- Allows you to work in France, if the expired residence permit allowed it.
- Allows you to travel outside France too, if it is accompanied by the old (expired) residence permit and your valid passport.

Hi Prasanth
I truly appreciate the valuable work you are doing to support those of us navigating the complex processes in France.
In my case, I applied for the APS nearly two months ago, but I have not received any acknowledgment/récépissé from my prefecture. Despite sending multiple emails (only receiving automated replies), trying to call (lines are always busy or automated), and even visiting the prefecture in person (they refuse to give an appointment and tell me to wait), I still have no update.
My titre de séjour will expire soon, and I am concerned about next steps. What can I do to obtain the récépissé? The process feels like a complete black box.
As I wait for the APS procedure, the only proof I have is the La Poste receipt for my registered letter. Can I legally continue to stay in France on this basis until I receive an acknowledgment or récépissé?
Regards,
Hello Sweeety,
For APS applications, they do not issue any récépissé. So, you have to wait. Keep following up with Prefecture. Yes, you can legally stay in France during an ongoing residence permit application. But after the expiry of your current residence permit, you cant work, travel, etc. For all APS questions https://prasanthragupathy.com/2024/01/aps-french-job-search-or-business-creation-resident-permit/
If not try at a different Prefecture like Nantes, Toulouse, etc. but a local address proof will be required.
Cheers,
Prasanth

Hi Prasanth
We are truly appreciate the valuable information you are sharing here for the Foreigners ( especially for the Asians to stay in Work Permit Visa/ Residents Card) in FRANCe.
Can someone who already applied their first demand to get 1st titre de sejour in france can travel by air within FRANCE with his recipisse copy. I saw that you mentioned it is not allow to exit outside of france by Air Travel with 1st demand of titre de sejour. But now is withing France only by Air Travel is allow?
Thanking you in advance.
Truly
Thandar
Hello Thandar,
If you have a récépissé de première demande de titre de séjour, you cannot come back to France with it. So, it does not matter if you fly with Air France or any other airline.
If you leave France, you can only return after obtaining a Visa de retour as explained on https://prasanthragupathy.com/2025/08/french-visa-de-retour-return-visa-what-you-need-to-know/ and https://prasanthragupathy.com/2023/10/visa-de-retour-application-experience-by-nikitha-guruswamy/

Hi Prasanth,
I just got a récépissé for my file. I had applied for status change from étudiant to salarié. I am travelling from France to India on 25th Dec and returning in Jan 2026. My current CdS expires by 19-Dec. I just want to confirm if I can re-enter France by presenting my expired CdS along with the récépissé? récépissé is valid until April 2026. I understand that you have indeed mentioned above that we can travel but I was not sure if it is the case for re-entry into France.
Kind Regards,
Vaishak
Hello Vaishak,
The above article answers your questions in detail. Please check the relevant type of récépissé listed above.
When I say travel, it means re-entry (to & fro) too directly or transit via Schengen country. Also FYI https://prasanthragupathy.com/2024/02/faq-travel-with-a-french-resident-permit-which-is-expiring-soon-or-has-expired/

Prasanth

Cheers,
Prasanth

Hi Prashant,
Need guidance regarding my residence permit. I am doing my Masters (in 2nd yr now).Got the Attestation de favourable till Sep 2026. My project gets over in the end of Aug. 2026. My defense may be in September.
How do I apply for an extension?
Thanks in advance
Kk
Hello Krishna,
If jury is completed before the expiry of your CdS étudiant, please follow one of the below steps,
https://prasanthragupathy.com/2024/01/aps-french-job-search-or-business-creation-resident-permit/
https://prasanthragupathy.com/2023/09/work-resident-permits-after-graduating-in-france/
If jury is after the expiry of CdS étudiant, apply for a renewal using a letter from your college and the CdS will be extended for 3 months (usually).
Cheers,
Prasanth
