French Income Tax Refunds and Payments: 2025 Calendar

Published on: July 30, 2025 | Article: 334 | By: @rprasanth_kumar

French Income Tax returns are processed in July. Following your 2025 tax declaration, you may find yourself in one of two scenarios:

  1. You will receive a refund from tax department, if you had overpaid the income tax in 2024.
  2. You owe the tax department and must do a payment, if you had underpaid in 2024.

Since 1st January 2019, income tax is deducted at source (withholding tax, advance payment) in France. The tax payment is regularized the following year during summer.

Reimbursement from Tax Department

You are eligible for a reimbursement,

  • if the tax amount deducted in 2024 from your salary and other income exceeds the final amount of your tax, or
  • if you are entitled to a refund due to tax reductions or credits.

The details of your tax calculation will appear on your tax return “Avis d’imposition 2025”. The reimbursements are made either on 25th July or 1st August 2025,

  • Directly to the bank account that you provided during the tax declaration.
  • If you have not provided a bank account, tax department will send a cheque to your home address.

Payment to Tax Department

You have an income tax balance to be paid to Impots,

  • If the amounts deducted at source in 2024 were insufficient, because your % of tax deducted at source was less “prélèvement à la source”
  • If you had received a bigger tax credit or advance tax reduction in January 2025, than what was required.

The tax amount to be paid will be taken directly from your bank account on 25th September 2025,

  • in one go if the amount owed is less than or equal to €300.
  • in 4 times (25th sept, 27th oct, 27th nov and 29th dec) if the amount is greater than €300.

    Hi Prasanth,
Thanks for the info. I have small doubt.
Automatic withdrawals dates given as Sept 25th, Oct 27th, Nov 27th & Dec 29.
Is these dates are fixed for the Bank withdrawals ? OR can i change these dates in impots as per my payment convenient ?

  2. Hello,
Thanks for the details. I have not received my refund not I got the tax notice yet (as of 1st August). According to ‘Avis de declaration’, I should get a refund. Is there still a possibility that I’ll get a refund later on? Should I wait or should I contact someone?

    1. Hello Jay,

If you do not receive anything by the end of Aug, please send a message to your local tax office via your account (in French).

      Cheers,
      Prasanth

      1. Hello Prasanth,
Thanks for your reply. I received my tax refund on Sep 30 and my tax notice 1 weeks after. I consulted one of the tax offices and they mentioned that it’s normal every year that tax refunds and notices come in batches until January the next year (Jan 2026). Based on this experience, it would be nice if you can mention this in your future posts that it’s not that everyone will receive on July 31 or Aug 01 but this will be the first reimbursement. This avoids the panic like I had. Otherwise it’s great article. Thank you.

        Regards,
        Jay

  3. Hello Prasanth,

Thank you for the information. I have not received any refund nor any communication through the tax office sofar. We are declaring taxes in France for the first time and we don’t have a tax number as well. Should I wait or how should I contact them?

    Regards,
    Roshni

    1. Hello Roshni,

Try logging into Impots website using your France connect account. You can also check with the local tax office.

      Cheers,
      Prasanth

    2. Hello Roshni,
I had same experience and received the refund and tax notice end of Sep-beginning of Oct. It seems they refund in batches (vs what the article says), so depending on your batch, you will get refund until Jan 2026. So have patience and wait.

      Regards,
      Jay
