Travelling outside France while waiting for or renewing a residence permit can create complications when returning. To avoid issues such as delays in resuming work, studies, or school, the French authorities strongly advise foreign nationals not to leave France without a valid residence permit.
For minors, this means ensuring they hold either a DCEM (Document de Circulation pour Étranger Mineur) or a TIR (Titre d’Identité Républicain), both of which are issued by the prefecture of residence in France.
In situations where travel is unavoidable, the French Embassy or consulate may issue a Visa de Retour (return visa) that allows you to re-enter France legally.
Important recommendation: Do not leave France if you only have a récépissé de première demande (a receipt for a first-time residence permit application), unless there is a case of force majeure. Who can apply for a Return Visa?
A return visa to France is only granted under specific circumstances and for one-time use.
A. For adults (18 and over)
✅ If your valid residence permit has been lost or stolen during travel.
✅ If you hold a valid récépissé/attestation from a first residence permit application issued by a prefecture in France.
✅ If you have an expired récépissé/attestation for the renewal of a residence permit.
B. For minors (under 18)
✅ If DCEM or TIR has been lost or stolen.
✅ If DCEM has expired or you are awaiting a new DCEM application.

Important Reminders
- Any application involving a lost or stolen residence permit/visa must include a police report and a photocopy of the lost document. This document will also be required during airport checks and when collecting your new residence permit at the prefecture.
- To re-enter the Schengen Area, regardless of whether your nationality requires a visa or not, you must always prove that you meet the conditions of entry—such as having sufficient financial resources for your stay.
- TIR for minors is not issued since 2019. Now, only a DCEM is possible.
Summary
The visa de retour is not a substitute for a residence permit. It is an exceptional, one-time solution to help foreign nationals re-enter France in urgent or unforeseen circumstances. The best way to avoid complications is always to travel with a valid residence permit (or DCEM/TIR for minors).

Hi Prasanth,
My postdoc in France finished at the end of June 2025. Using the avis de situation from France Travail, I applied for titre de sejour extension on 15th July, and my RP expired on 31st July. Due to a family emergency I had to leave for India on 14th August. I was hoping to receive an attestation (either prolongation d’instruction or decision favorable) soon, but I still haven’t gotten one, even though I have waited for a while now. I would now need to go back so I can regularize my situation with the help of a lawyer. My question is: For my situation since I have an ongoing RP application (with confirmation de depot), am I eligible for a visa de retour, or should I be applying for a separate long-stay visa? All this while I have maintained my apartment in Paris, and I continue to pay rent, utilities, etc.
Hello Ranjit,
As explained in the above article, you can apply for a visa de retour. I hope you had informed France Travail regarding your trip to India.
Cheers,
Prasanth

Since I left for India after the expiry of my RP, I wasn’t sure whether I was still eligible for visa de retour. Thanks for the clarification. I could not take leave on the site since I was automatically deregistered, but I informed my conseiller of the dates via email.
With an ongoing CdS application, you can apply for a Visa de retour. Feel free to check the French Embassy or consulate near your home.
If you aren’t registered currenlty with France Travail for chomage, then it doesn’t matter. People receiving chomage must remain in France, except the annual vacations by informing France Travail.
All the best.
