Travel with a French Resident Permit which is expiring soon or has expired

Updated on: October 23, 2025 | By: @rprasanth_kumar

Traveling using a soon to expire or an expired resident permit is one of the most common FAQs asked by the expat community in France. So, can they travel?. This article addresses the answers.

Important Note: Whatever the visa situation, you will be able to travel to your home country as long as you have the original passport and it’s valid on the date of travel.

  • A direct flight is highly recommended. If this is not feasible, next option is transit via a Schengen country.
  • For example: An Indian citizen whose French visa/residence permit has expired, can travel from France to India with an Indian passport. He/she can travel from Paris to Delhi, directly or a transit with Amsterdam, Frankfurt, etc.
  • Any overstaying after the visa expiry date without any ongoing residence permit application can negatively impact your French/Schengen visa applications in the future. Please, respect the local immigration laws & procedures.

Can I travel using a French resident permit that is expiring very soon?

Yes, you can travel on or before the expiry date mentioned on your resident permit.

For example: If you are going to your home country, you can go and return before the validity date.

However, it is highly recommended to attach a few supporting documents depending on your resident permit status. This will help to avoid any unnecessary complications during airport immigration.

Whichever is applicable,

  • Copy of a RDV confirmation from your prefecture about a renewal of your resident permit or a status change application.
  • Copy of prefecture’s confirmation about an ongoing renewal or status change application. It can be a valid récépissé too.
  • If you have an Attestation de prolongation de l’instruction or  Attestation de décision favorable, you can present it too. You can find more details here What Are The Online Attestations Of French Resident Permits?.

Can I travel using an expired French resident permit?

No, you cannot travel using an expired resident permit. If you travel, you can return to France only with a Visa de retour.

However, there are a few exceptions and they are listed below.

If your residence permit expires during your stay outside France and you do not have a renewal attestation or récépissé, you will not be able to return to France. You must apply for a Visa de retour.

When the expired resident permit is accompanied by one of the following documents, you can travel.

Visa de Retour

A single usage return visa allowing travel back to France may be issued by a French Embassy or Consulate in your country.

Suggestions

  • In these situations, it is better to avoid traveling outside the Schengen area. The only other exception is travel between France and your home country.
  • If your attestation or récépissé has the text premier demande or premier titre de sejour it does not allow you to travel. Even if you travel to your home country using a valid passport, you can return only with a visa de retour.
  • If you are in doubt, you can write to the Airline and the French Embassy or Consulate in your country. A written confirmation can always be helpful.

  1. Hi Prashant, thanks. I had reached France early 2024 and validated my VL TS VISA and received 1 year document which is equal to Residence card. It was expired in end of this Jan 2025. I had applied for renewal and received the decision favorable already (for 4 years card).
    I am currently in India.
    My question is :
Can I come back to France with expired 1 year validation card along with decision favorable document for renewal application? Thanks for your answer.

    1. Hello Naga,

This article was written to answer questions from people in your situation. It has all the answers you need.

Yes, you can travel with the expired visa & the favorable decision attestation as long as the text “premier demande” is not mentioned in the attestation.

If this text is present, you may or may not be allowed to travel back to France, depending on how strictly the officials enforce the rules. In case you are refused from boarding, a visa de retour is the only option.

      Cheers,
      Prasanth

      1. Thank you. This is what mentioned in decision favorable document
“Cette attestation n’est valable qu’accompagnée du visa de long séjour ou du titre précédemment
        détenu.
Ce document autorise le franchissement des frontières de l’espace Schengen”

  3. Hi prashanth,
I have passport talent famillie -VLSTS visa with 1 year validity until 30 sep 2025.
Can i apply for renewal in July and travel to india in August and come back by september 2nd week(before my 1 year VLSTS expires)?

      1. My VLTS is expiring on 21/02 next year. What is the earliest date that i can apply for resident permit? My prefecture is nanterre.
Does applying too early lead to rejection of the application?

  4. Hi Prashanth,

My visa is expired on september 30.I had applied for my passport talent famillie visa renewal on july 21st, but by mistake i did it under wrong category called vie private et famillie which i realised recently when i didn’t get updates. Seems like application is with investigation team which i heard from ANEF when i contacted. And they suggested to directly contact prefecture investigation department for updates.I tried to submit letter at prefecture du rhone lyon ,but they asked to put in drop box and am not able to get RDV to discuss it also.I even sent them mail.
Do you have any suggestions about what can be done next?
They didn’t provide me recipisse or prolongation document.
Thank you in advance for your inputs to help me resolve this issue

    1. Hello Theja,
Only the Prefecture can help with it. They might consider the application as CdS Talent Famille or simply close the application. If its the later, you should reapply immediately.

You can take help (free) from the following service https://www.defenseurdesdroits.fr/nous-contacter-355 and they will check with the Prefecture. But its not an error from the Prefecture side, and so its very difficult to do anything about it.

      Cheers,
      Prasanth

  5. Dear Prashant,

Thank you very much for the valuable information you provide on your website — it has been extremely helpful. I am a non-EU national and need to travel to India to attend an important family function.

My long-stay French researcher visa expires on 10 December 2025. I am scheduled to return to France on 8 December 2025, leaving only a two-day window before the visa expires. Under these circumstances, I would like to know whether I am likely to face any issues with immigration upon my re-entry to France.

I submitted my first residence permit application through the ANEF online platform on 25 October 2025, and at present I only have the Attestation de dépôt de demande de carte de séjour. I have been informed that the Attestation de prolongation de l’instruction de la demande de carte de séjour can only be issued after the expiration of the visa, i.e., after 10 December 2025, and therefore I will not have it at the time of my return. I also do not expect to receive an Attestation de décision favorable or the physical residence permit card before my return date.

Given this situation, I would appreciate your guidance on whether I should anticipate any difficulties when re-entering France on 8 December 2025.

Additionally, I still hold a valid Danish job-seeking residence permit from my previous studies in Denmark (valid until May 2027), although I have since relocated to France. I would like to know whether this Danish residence permit could be used as an alternative means to enter France in case re-entry with my French long-stay visa poses an issue.

Thank you in advance for your time and advice. I truly appreciate your expertise in this area.

    Kind regards,
    Priyanshu Sinha
