2024 Income Tax Declaration Errors: Online Correction Service is Now Open

The 2024 French income tax notices “Avis d’impôts” for 2023 income have been released. If you spot any errors on your tax return, such as missing a donation or omitting other crucial details, there’s no need to panic – corrections can still be made. For those who filed their returns online, the online correction system has been available since 31st July 2024.

As you receive your income tax notices, determine if you owe more or are due a refund. Then, you can use the online correction service to address any adjustments needed.

If it was your first declaration, you can find the French Tax ID (TIN) known as « numéro fiscal » on your tax return « Avis d’impôts ».

Who Can Use this Service?

  • Anyone who submitted their income tax declaration online during April to June 2024.
  • Those who benefited from automatic declaration.

Correction Service Period

  • From: July 31, 2024
  • Until: December 4, 2024

Examples of Common Corrections 

  • Foreign Bank accounts: Missed declaring a non-French bank or investment account?. You can add it in the 3916 annexure. 
  • Donations to Charity: Forgot to report a donation? You can add it to claim your tax benefit.
  • Education Expenses: Forgot to claim a reduction related to your child’s education? You can update this information.
  • Unreported Income: Accidentally left out some income? You can correct this too.

How to Correct Your Tax Return?

  1. Log in to “Votre espace particulier” on the income tax website from a computer.
  2. Accéder à la correction en ligne“: Click on this option, correct any errors, and validate your changes.
  3. Receive a New Tax Notice: After the tax administration processes your corrections, you will receive an updated tax notice. Note that the changes might not appear immediately in your personal space.

Information for Mobile App Users

  • If you submitted your return using the impots.gouv mobile app, you can only make corrections on your smartphone within the same period (July 31 to December 4, 2024).

Situations Not Covered by the Correction Service

You cannot use the online correction service for the following changes:

  • Family status (e.g., marriage, civil partnership, divorce, death)
  • Civil status updates
  • Designating a trusted third party
  • Adding or changing your address

For these situations, please use the secure messaging feature in your personal space on the tax website.

  1. Select “Écrire“.
  2. Then “Je signale une erreur sur le calcul de mon impôt“, and
  3. Choose “Ma demande concerne l’impôt sur le revenu ou les prélèvements sociaux” and follow the prompts.

Corrections for Offline Paper Declarations

Unfortunately, Online correction service is not available for paper based offline income tax declarations. But, You can submit a correction request until 31st December of the second year following the year of the tax notice. It can be done by one of the following methods.

  1. Online: Use the secure messaging service in your online tax account, select “Ecrire“, then “Je signale une erreur sur le calcul de mon impôt“, and finally “Ma demande concerne l’impôt sur le revenu ou les prélèvements sociaux,” and follow the prompts.

  2. By Post: Send a letter to your local tax office with your personal details, tax number, the issue you’re addressing, and supporting documents including the relevant tax forms.

  3. In Person: Visit your local tax office to submit your claim directly.
