If you are applying or renewing your residence permit in France, it’s crucial to apply within the specified timeframe to avoid delays or penalties. This guide explains the timelines applicable for a renewal or a residence permit category change application. Following these guidelines will help ensure a smoother application process.

Renewal Application

Renewal of the same residence permit. Example: Carte de Séjour Salarié to Carte de Séjour Salarié

You must submit your resident permit renewal applications between 120 days and 60 days of the expiry date.

  • Applications submitted within 2 months of expiry might have processing delays. They might also be subjected to a late submission fine of 180 euros.
  • Applications submitted within 15 days of expiry might get rejected too.
  • If you are planning to move to a different address in the same city or another city, then it’s better to submit the application after you move. However, the conditions explained earlier must be respected.
  • The renewal process can take 2 to 6 months and sometimes even longer. Unfortunately, Nothing much can be done to expedite the process.
  • If you face of long delay of more than 3-4 months, you can try contacting Défenseur des droits or an Immigration Lawyer but it doesn’t guarantee a favorable outcome.
  • So, submitting the renewal application as early as possible is the only option.

Note: ANEF website does not accept applications with expired visas or residence permits.

Status Change Application

Application for a different type of residence permit. Example: Changement de statut from Carte de Séjour Salarié to Carte de Séjour Passeport Talent or Carte de Résident.

You can submit your application to change the status of your resident permit category at any point of time, before the expiry date. You do not have to wait until the resident permit is due for renewal.

So, submit your applications within the deadlines and avoid any unnecessary complications.
