Question from a community member
Dear Prasanth,
I have been working in France for the past three years under the Passeport Talent – Salarié en Mission (CdS PT SEM) residence permit. My wife, as a dependent on my status, is also working under the Passeport Talent – Salarié en Mission Famille (CdS PT Famille) permit, earning €44,000 per year.
Now, I would like to convert her residence permit from a dependent status to an independent Salarié permit without changing her job. Neither of us has pursued education in France. I would like to know if this is possible and, if so, what the procedure would be.
Additionally, if my wife transitions to a Passeport Talent – Salarié permit, would I be able to convert my residence permit to be her dependent while continuing my job?
The reason for this query is that I want to increase my job opportunities. Since my current status requires visa sponsorship, changing my residence permit status could improve my chances of finding a suitable role.
Thanks in advance for your answer.
My Answers
Unfortunately, your spouse is not eligible for an independent Carte de Séjour Passeport Talent – Salarié Qualifié (CdS PT SQ) or Carte de Séjour Passeport Talent – Carte Bleue Européenne (CdS PT CBE) because:
- She did not study in France.
- Her salary is below the threshold of €53,800 required for CdS PT CBE.
For more details on work permits after studying in France, refer to this resource: Work Resident Permits After Graduating in France. Before proceeding, I recommend reviewing the risks involved with Passeport Talent – Salarié en Mission permit explained in the following articles:
- Changing Employers Before Completing 2 Years in France.
- FAQ on Resident Permit Status After Job Resignations and Terminations.
Steps to Convert Residence Permit
Step 1: Converting Her CdS PT Famille to CdS Salarié
- Her employer must apply for a Work Permit if it has not already been issued. More information is available here: French Work Permit – Everything to Know.
- Once the work permit is approved, she can apply for a residence permit conversion offline at the local Préfecture, as this process is not yet available on the ANEF website.
Step 2: You becoming her Dependent
- If she obtains a regular Carte de Séjour Salarié, she will not be eligible to add you as a dependent through the quick dependent residence permit process.
- Only individuals holding any category of Passeport Talent (CdS PT) can invite their spouses through the accelerated process.
- The alternative would be to go through the Regroupement Familial process, which is lengthy and complex: Family Reunification – Bringing Family to France.
Potential Solutions
Solution 1: Carte de Séjour Passeport Talent – Carte Bleue Européenne (CdS PT CBE)
The 3 eligibility conditions,
- You need to have a degree that represents at least 3 years of higher education or five years of comparable professional experience.
- You must have a work contract with a minimum duration of one year.
- Your gross annual salary should be at least €53,836.50.
If all the above eligible conditions are satisfied,
- She finds a job with a salary of at least €53,800, allowing her to switch to a CdS PT CBE and add you as her dependent.
- You find a job that pays at least €53,800, enabling you to switch to a CdS PT CBE and add her as your dependent.
Solution 2: Carte de Séjour Passeport Talent – Entreprise Innovante (CdS PT EI)
The 3 eligibility conditions,
- You are hired by a young innovative company or a company recognized as innovative by the French Ministry of Economy.
- Your role is directly related to the research and development project of this company.
- You have an employment contract that provides an annual gross salary of at least €43,243.
If all the above eligible conditions are satisfied,
- She finds a job, allowing her to switch to a CdS PT EI and add you as her dependent.
- You find a job, enabling you to switch to a CdS PT EI and add her as your dependent.
Anything below these salary thresholds could complicate your situation in France, making residence permit transitions more challenging.
Cheers,
Prasanth Ragupathy

I need some guidance on this matter and would appreciate any advice :-
I am currently on an APS Visa (1st year) valid until May 2026. If I receive a CDI (permanent contract) with a salary less than 1.5 times the SMIC (French minimum wage), can I still accept the CDI? What potential repercussions might I face later?
Please provide any additional information or relevant insights.Thank You !

Thanks for your response, but I had been through it already before asking as I don’t see any info for a CDI job with a salary less than 1.5 x SMIC.
So wanted to check if you’d have that information as well. Thanks anyway !!
Hello,
Unfortunately, 1.5 x SMIC is the bare minimum required for work related residence permits in France. So, please try to find a job which satisfies the salary requirements. More details in https://prasanthragupathy.com/2024/10/french-minimum-salary-smic-increases-on-1st-november-2024/

Hi Prasanth,
My wife also likes to move to independent visa. Currently she holds PT dependent visa. She earns salary grater than Bluecare threshold.
1. She likes to apply for 10 year card. What are the documents required from her employer?
2. In ANCEF site, we don’t see any option to apply for 10 year card. How to proceed further?
Thank you,
Suman.
Hello Suman,
I have written a dedicated article on this topic and it answers all your questions. French PR | Carte de résident de longue durée-UE | 10-year card application process online and offline https://prasanthragupathy.com/2024/07/french-pr-carte-de-resident-personal-experience-from-nanterre-prefecture/

Hello Nandy,
Yes, you can submit a CdS PT CBE (EU Blue Card) online via your ANEF account, if you are eligible as per the criteria explained on https://prasanthragupathy.com/2023/09/work-resident-permits-after-graduating-in-france/

Thank you. For higher education degree (>3years), do i need to submit the french translated version? I’ve btech and MBA degree from India.
Hello Nandy,
Yes, all the documents in other languages must be translated to French and this is the official requirement. Sometimes people submit docs in English and these might get accepted or rejected.
Cheers,
Prasanth

Question received via Email: Good move from Dependant to EU Blue Card?
As I already posted this topic in the group, based on your advice writing an email for better constructive answers.
I am continuing this with the previous threads, as you will get an idea of my situation.
Briefly, we have been living in France for the last 2.3 years. My wife is holding an EU Blue card, and I am a dependent.
Now, I have secured a CDI contract from a French company, and it complies with the EU Blue Card criteria.
My points are:
1. Pros and cons ( I am not specifying because I don’t know specific ones). Listing some below, which I have in my head
2. Do we need to inform the employer about this process/change?
3. Any impact on the current job while in this process, as it is based on the Dependant carte du sejour?
4. If I apply now, is that going to be valid for 4 years now, or will it follow the old one dates (ex, my current sejour will going to be expire in 2027)
5. Do we need any documents from the employer other than the contract if I decide to apply?
Hello,
If you are eligible for a carte de séjour talent – carte bleue européenne, it can be a really good choice to apply for it. However, you will lose a right and it may or may not be important depending on your future plans.
1. When you obtain an independent CdS Talent CBE, you are no longer dependent on your spouse’s CdS status. This can be helpful in many scenarios (good & bad situations). However, you will lose the right to freelance or start a business. Only a salaried employment is possible.
2. Yes, because an attestation d’employeur will be required. More details on https://prasanthragupathy.com/2023/09/work-resident-permits-after-graduating-in-france/#5
3. No because you are not changing jobs.
4. Yes, the new CdS will be valid for 4 years If you are on a CDI contract.
5. Already answered above.
Cheers,
Prasanth
