FAQ: Indian Elections – Can NRIs vote from outside India?

Indian citizens living abroad aged 18 or above can apply using Form 6A to register as voters in the constituency where they are a ordinarily resident.

According to Election Commission of India,

  • A citizen of India, who is absent from the country owing to employment, education etc, and has not acquired citizenship of any other country are known as Overseas Voters and are eligible to be registered as a voter in the address mentioned in their Indian passport”. 
  • “After the enrolment, the voter will be able to cast vote in election in the constituency, if he/she is physically present in the polling station in India along with original passport on the day of poll”.

It means that NRIs cannot vote from anywhere outside India.

Documents required for registering as Overseas voters:

  • Form 6A downloaded from the link eci.nic.in/eci_main/forms/Form-6A.pdf of Election Commission of India. It is also available free of cost at Indian Embassy in your country.
  • One recent passport size coloured photograph affixed in Form 6A.
  • Self attested photocopies of the relevant pages of the passport containing photograph, address in India and all other.
  • The page of passport containing the valid visa.
